What is difference between cold and flu?

The flu and the common cold are both respiratory illnesses.  Common cold is acute viral infection of the upper respiratory tract. The resulting inflammation involves the nasal passages, throat, sinuses, trachea, and bronchi. The common cold can be caused by one of many viruses. Colds usually do not result in serious health problems, such as pneumonia, bacterial infections, or hospitalizations. About half of all cases of common cold are caused by the rhinovirus group. Usually people call a severe common cold the flu, but they are quite different illnesses.  The flu and the common cold are caused by different viruses. Flu is an acute viral respiratory disease with clinical manifestations that often resemble a severe form of the common cold. Symptoms of flu usually start suddenly with a high fever and you may feel sick enough to go to bed.  All age groups are susceptible, but the prevalence is highest in school-age children.

Breaking News from the Public Press

Influenza vaccine is safe for babies and toddlers....

The Associated Press reported on October 24, 2006 that the results of a recent large-scale study confirm that the influenza vaccine is safe for babies and toddlers. Researchers studied 45,000 U.S. children and found almost no side effects requiring medical treatment during the six weeks after the youngsters were vaccinated. With flu vaccination now recommended for all children aged between 6 months and 5 years, the findings are reassuring. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimate that more than 90 children under 5 die of the flu each season.

Turkey Tips
  • A 15 pound turkey feeds about 10 people with a bit leftover for casserole.  A 15 pound turkey will hold about 7 cups of stuffing
  • Thaw your turkey in the fridge for about 5 hours per pound or in cold water for about 1 hour per pound (make sure to change your water a few times).  If you do nothing else right, make sure you get the darn thing defrosted in time!!  I'm speaking from experience *blush*.
